Derek McInnes hit back at Ally McCoist, slams Calvin Bassey for Rangers v Lyon

Rangers warmed up for their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League with a 1-1 draw away to Lyon.

The Teddy Bears finished second in group A, being the only team to take points off of runaway leaders Lyon; despite fielding a makeshift starting eleven in their final group game.

Rangers went into halftime 1-0 to the good but were pegged back by Lyon following a ‘clumsy’ piece of defending by Nigerian, Calvin Bassey.

After the game former Rangers manager, Derek McInnes, disagreed with Ally McCoist on BT Sport – who thought the 21-year-old was unlucky by saying:

“I don’t think it is unlucky, I think his positioning is fine, but I think he’s got to get down lower to try and anticipate that type of delivery and be more ready to deal with it,” he said.

“He looks a wee bit upright to me and it just comes off him, it is a bit clumsy for me rather than unlucky.”

One blip.

However, it was an all-around positive performance from the Rangers defender, showing great composure on the ball and when dealing with attacking threats – Toko Ekambi and Moussa Dembele.

Bassey has played 18 times for Rangers this season after signing from Leicester City for a mere £230k and he is growing in confidence every time he steps foot on the pitch.

A left-back by trade, he has been hailed ‘the future of centre back’ by Gers fans and continues to impress as he shows his dominance at the heart of the Rangers’ defence at such a young age.

Even if he does make mistakes like he did tonight, he will learn from them as all young players do. He is certainly one a player to keep an eye on as Rangers continue to challenge on all fronts.
