Alex Rae thrilled by Nathan Patterson for Rangers v Lyon

Alex Rae was thrilled to see Rangers defender Nathan Patterson earn a start in the Europa League against Lyon.

The young defensive sensation earned his first start under Giovanni van Bronckhorst as the Bears travelled across the channel to France.

Rae has been blown away by the “quality” of Patterson, despite the “incredible” stats of his rival James Tavernier.

Speaking during live commentary on BT Sports, Rae singled out Patterson after a rare start for the youngster.

“He’s been good quality, defensively and offensively,” he said.

“Struggled for game time behind James Tavernier, who has been incredible.”

Quality.

This debate will continue for as long as both players are at Ibrox, regardless of whoever is in charge of the club.

That has been proved by Van Bronckhorst replacing Steven Gerrard, the opportunities haven’t exactly been coming every week.

Patterson is attracting big interest from clubs south of the border, and this lack of football could push him over the edge.

The Ibrox sensation has proved he can do it all and on the big stage too against a huge side such as Lyon, is it time he gets more minutes?

Tavernier is the main man, and he has done nothing to suggest that he should be dropped, but this is what the likes of Van Bronckhorst get paid for.

The skipper is probably guaranteed to come back in at Hearts on Sunday (12th December) and it will be intriguing to see if Patterson gets more chances between now and Christmas.
