Jordan Campbell: Rangers could prioritise defender in January
Rangers could make a move for a new defender their latest “priority” in the transfer window, according to Jordan Campbell.
It was shared at the annual Rangers AGM that investors have already pumped the £7.5million into the club that was needed this season.
The Athletic journalist, Campbell, has shared that while Giovanni van Bronckhorst is still analysing his squad, a new central defender could arrive in the next two windows.
Writing in a live Q&A for The Athletic on Tuesday, Campbell shared the latest on van Bronckhorst and the squad.
I believe he’s still in the process of assessing the squad as it’s early days and players are still to come back from injury he hasn’t worked with yet but I’d be surprised if centre-back wasn’t a top priority in the next two windows.
“If Goldson leaves in the summer for free, it leaves Balogun (also out of contract), Helander (into final year), Simpson (not making squads), Katic (on loan after serious injury) and Bassey (been great the last two games but need to see if he can sustain that form).
“That is short so I think it will depend on what decisions are made on the first two. If it’s decided they’ll both move on I’d be in favour of bringing someone in during January so they were prepared for next season, like they did with Wright and Simpson last year.
“Doekhi has been linked and I think he will fit the profile of centre-back GvB likes. Mobile and comfortable with the ball. He’ll need to plug into a wider scouting system though so won’t all be Dutch picks but certainly a good market for Rangers.”
Depends on one man.
So, it looks like it all depends on Connor Goldson.
With his contract up in the summer and no new deal yet signed, he is free to open talks with other clubs outside of the country in January.
Should that happen, it is a gap that certainty needs plugging and a new central defender would be more than a priority.
Danilho Doekhi could be the perfect signing, given that he has even been linked with Liverpool as well as the Bears.
Captaining Vitesse in Europe proves he is the man for the big occasion, and he could be the perfect Dutch signing for van Bronckhorst and his team.
More updates will come as we approach January, that’s for sure, but it looks as though a new defender is one to watch.
