Rangers manager GvB discusses forgotten man’s future

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has indicated that Rangers striker Jermain Defoe will only be used as a player now.

The 39-year-old was part of Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff; however, he will now only be a part of the Dutchman’s playing squad.

Defoe hadn’t played for the Gers since August until van Brockhorst brought him on for a minute on Sunday.

Speaking to Sky Sports, GvB said: “Jermain’s been really good. When I came here, of course, he was part of the coaching staff but also a player.

“He’s also busy with his training badges, which is really good because we’ve already started thinking about team processes and tactical possibilities.

“But for now, Jermain is still a player, and we’ll use him only as a player.”

Interesting move.

It seems as if van Bronckhorst is happy with his current backroom staff, and though Defoe is 39, using him as a player could prove to be an inspired idea.

The forward has scored 32 goals in 74 appearances for the Bears since he arrived in Glasgow, so he knows where the net is.

Of course, Rangers have Fashion Sakala, Alfredo Morelos, and Kemar Roofe as other forward options, but having a fourth in Defoe won’t do the club any harm.

It is hard to know exactly how much game time Defoe will get between now and the end of the season, but it is nice to hear that he will be used in the first team.

You never know; he might just end up scoring some very important goals for the Gers as he has done in the past.

So, it is good to see him back, and now we just have to wait and see how he fits into van Bronckhorst’s plans.
