Graeme Souness worried by Rangers finances after multi-million announcement

Graeme Souness is worried about the financial figures announced by Rangers when they revealed their accounts earlier this month.

Last season, the Scottish champions suffered losses of £23.5million, which was a £7.5million increase on the season before.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has inherited a squad that is top of the Premiership table and on course for a league title as well as a spot in the Champions League group stages next season.

But ex-Gers boss Souness admits that his former club isn’t in the best of shape behind the scenes.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the Sky Sports pundit said: “Rangers’ financial results came out just recently and they are not in a great place. Getting into the Champions League will alleviate their financial problems in the short term.

“They’ve got to get there and stay there. Celtic will be eyeing that with the same attitude.

“It’s all open to the winner. But Rangers are sitting top of the league, with a new manager who knows the club and with players who know what it’s like to win the league.”

What’s to worry about?

Rangers fans do not need to worry about the club’s finances.

Yes, the numbers are daunting but van Bronckhorst’s newly-inherited squad has a host of players who have seen their transfer value increase massively and Champions League football next season is a massive possibility.

If we win the league for a second season in a row, qualify for the Champions League group stages and draw a big team in the Europa League this season, we’re looking at a major boost to the revenue.

Of course, the unpredictable nature of the COVID-19 pandemic isn’t going to help and the latest stories in the news suggests there may be something to fear about in the non-so-distant future.

But based on how things are going, there’s very little worry about and we’d suggest Souness thinks about what he’s saying before casting doubt upon the accounts at Ibrox.

Leave that for those number-crunching, obsessive weirdos from the East End.

In other Rangers news, this forward is bound to exit Ibrox after what Ross Wilson said at the AGM.
