Rangers bound to get rid of Brandon Barker after Ross Wilson update at AGM

Brandon Barker is bound to be counting down the days he has left at Rangers after Ross Wilson’s update on player contracts on Tuesday.

Rangers held their AGM this week and one of the subjects of discussion was the number of players who’ll be entering the final six months of their contracts soon.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad could be whittled down massively at the end of the season if players are released but Wilson, as quoted by Heart & Hand Podcast founder David Edgar, said that some decisions will be made in the summer.

Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Leon Balgoun, Steven Davis and Scott Arfield have all played plenty of football for the Gers this season so it remains to be seen whether or not they’ll be offered fresh deals.

But there’s no doubt that some players will be heading towards the end of their time at Ibrox with Edgar sharing that Wilson said non-contributing players “will be let go” when their deals expire.

Barker, 25, is the most obvious player to be emptying his locker at the end of the season based on this update with the former Manchester City forward failing to play a single game of the Light Blues this season.

The Englishman made just one of Steven Gerrard’s matchday squads before he left when he was an unused substitute in the League Cup win over Livingston while van Bronckhorst is yet to call upon the attacker.

He’s as ‘non-contributing’ as you can get and it seems nailed on that Barker will be released next year.

As for the others, second-choice goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin has played a fair bit this season so a new deal could be on the cards for him and Andy Firth, who’s even further down the goalkeeping pecking order, is also entering the final months of his deal.

Jermain Defoe’s another and while he’s not contributing as a player, he is on the coaching team at Ibrox so it remains to be seen what will happen with the former England striker.

In other Rangers news, Kris Boyd was left stunned by something “unbelievable” this Ger did.
