Chris Sutton: Rangers could be forced to sell one player in January

Chris Sutton has insisted that Rangers may be forced to sell one of their star players in the upcoming January window.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst arrived at Ibrox this week to replace Steven Gerrard, who has spoken out about the lack of funds before.

Sutton believes that the only issue facing the Bears is whether to back their new manager financially after the losses were posted recently.

Speaking on BT Sports’ Scottish Football Extra, Sutton questioned the funds available at Ibrox moving further down the line.

“The issue will come further down the line in January,” he said.

“Will he be allowed to bring other players in? I’m not so sure Rangers have the funds to do that, maybe they’ll have to sell a player.”

Problem?

We don’t see this being the case.

There has to be a ruthless approach at Ibrox, and winning the Scottish Premiership title would bring an end to these financial worries.

Given that an automatic qualification spot to the Champions League is now in place in Scotland, along with that comes a £40million windfall – something that would blow those losses out of the park.

Why would we sell players now? There has to be a plan in place to go all out for that title, and if that doesn’t work out, then selling players will simply have to happen – that is football and more importantly business.

Sutton is clearly nit-picking and looking for something to put a negative spin on this appointment, but that may just be fear with van Bronckhorst the perfect man for the job right now – the only way is up.
