John Terry open to manager role as Rangers seek Steven Gerrard replacement – Sky Sports

Chelsea legend John Terry is someone who could be the next manager at Rangers, according to Sky Sports News.

On Thursday, Steven Gerrard’s move from Ibrox to Aston Villa was confirmed and that has led to a lot of speculation about who could replace him in charge of the Scottish champions.

Sky Sports claim that after leaving his coaching role at billionaire-owed Villa earlier this year, 40-year-old Terry could be a contender to take his first step into senior management.

“The ex-England and Chelsea captain has been out of work since leaving Villa in July,” Sky Sports’ report said.

“Terry was Dean Smith’s assistant head coach for three years, where he helped Villa win promotion from the Championship in May 2019 as the club ended their three-year Premier League absence.

“At the time, Terry – who was tipped to become a manager in his own right – said he wanted to spend time with his family.

“His lack of experience as a number one is not dissimilar to Gerrard before his arrival and Sky Sports News has learnt he would be open to opportunities.

“However, it remains to be seen if Rangers would opt for another rookie appointment at a crucial stage of the season.”

Rangers could do worse than Terry, let’s be honest.

We took a chance on Gerrard and he didn’t have as much experience in the coaching game as Terry did.

Gerrard had only worked with Liverpool’s youngsters before he was brought to Ibrox but Terry had spent three years as assistant manager at Aston Villa.

As players, both Gerrard and Terry had very similar experiences. Both are among the best players to grace the Premier League, both played for England, both captained their clubs and both won major honours domestically and in Europe.

However, Terry isn’t as likeable as Gerrard.

In 2011, the ex-Chelsea and Aston Villa centre-back was accused of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand and we all know about the Wayne Bridge incident.

Do we want someone like that in charge of our club?

He may have a better coaching profile than Gerrard did before he arrived but will he have the support of 100 per cent of the players?

Based on previous incidents, he might not.
