Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants Rangers job, could have Jan Wouters as assistant

Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to be the next Rangers manager and could bring in Jan Wouters as his assistant, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reports that with Steven Gerrard being appointed in charge of Aston Villa, former Gers player van Bronckhorst, 46, is in contention to fill the imminent vacancy at Ibrox.

Van Bronckhorst is currently available after a short spell in charge of Guangzhou R&F in China. Wouters is also without a club after serving as Gio’s assistant at Feyenoord until 2018.

Get him in

We’ve seen a lot of names floating around on social media and in the betting markets since speculation about Gerrard moving to Aston Villa hit a new level.

Alex Neil, Derek McInnes and Russell Martin are among the names that make you want to heave.

However, van Bronckhorst is someone who most fans would surely back to be the next Ibrox boss based on his history in Glasgow and also the fact he won the Eredivisie title at Feyenoord.

Van Bronckhorst led the Rotterdam club to their first Dutch title in 18 years in the 2016/17 campaign.

Feyenoord pipped Ajax to the crown by just one point while van Bronckhorst also oversaw a win over Napoli in the Champions League group stages the following season.

Bert Konterman, who played with Gio at Ibrox, dubbed van Bronckhorst’s work as “fantastic” and hailed the “influential” coach back in 2017 [Guardian].

His spell in China didn’t go to plan and that was mainly due to the COVID-19 pandemic preventing him from seeing his family, so we shouldn’t really consider that when looking into whether the Dutchman would be a good hire for Rangers.

In all honesty, van Bronckhorst would be one of our top three picks to replace Gerrard based upon the names we’ve seen out there right now.

If he wants the job then Ross Wilson should have that discussion sooner rather than later.
