Chris Sutton reacts to Daily Record update on Steven Gerrard exit from Rangers
Chris Sutton has taken a swipe at Steven Gerrard with the Rangers manager reportedly closing in on the job at Aston Villa.
The Telegraph has reported that Gerrard is on the verge of replacing Dean Smith at Villa Park and Rangers granted him permission to enter talks with the Premier League club.
Last month, amid speculation linking him with the Newcastle job, Gerrard struck down a question by Emma Dodds on BT Sport as he declared himself happy at Ibrox.
In light of recent events, ex-Celtic striker Sutton has taken to Twitter to aim a dig at Gerrad for that interview after the Daily Record relayed the Telegraph’s report.
Sutton said: “I thought Steven was happy at Rangers?”
He is happy
Gerrard is happy. Why wouldn’t he be?
Rangers are top of the Scottish Premiership, they are the reigning champions, they are in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals and are in a good position to be playing in Europe after Christmas.
What’s not to be happy about?
Unfortunately, Aston Villa have come along and are offering something that Gerrard wants – and that’s likely to be a job in the English Premier League.
We can talk down Villa as much as we want. They’re a bang-average Premier League club who sold their best player in the summer and are now in a relegation scrap.
However, for someone who can be described as a Premier League legend from his days at Liverpool, moving back to England is surely a dream for Gerrard.
This doesn’t mean he’s been unhappy at Ibrox – it just means that a new opportunity has arisen and he’s going to take it.
Sutton’s ridiculous tweets shouldn’t get to anyone.
He’s up to his usual nonsense.
In other Rangers news, the Gers have made a shock approach to hire a manager to replace Gerrard.
