Journalist predicts Aston Villa-Steven Gerrard twist, still in Purslow contact
Local Midlands journalist Matt Maher has predicted a twist in Aston Villa’s hunt for a new manager, with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard high on the wishlist.
The Premier League club are looking for a new manager after relieving Dean Smith of his duties over the weekend.
Maher, the Chief Writer at the Express and Star has shared that Gerrard has stayed in close contact with Christian Purslow over the years since both left Liverpool.

Speaking to Clyde 1 this evening, Maher shared the latest on the ongoing situation including that Gerrard is likely the frontrunner.
“I’d say he’s high on their shortlist,” he said. “There was an easy link there to be made with Christian Purslow, the Villa chief executive knew Steven Gerrard from his time as managing at Liverpool.
“They’ve stayed relatively close since – Villa’s interest is genuine. He isn’t the only candidate they’re looking at, they will try and speak to him.
“Villa’s managerial searches do have a tendency to have the odd twist along the way.”

Frontrunner.
This is sounding worst with every passing update.
It looks as though we may need to start accepting the fact that there is a real possibility that Gerrard may not be taking charge of our next game.
Hibernian await in a huge semi-final cup clash at Hampden Park after the international break, and that could be a real awakening should a change be made before then.
Whatever happens, it has to be the best for the Bears.
Could Michael Beale be persuaded to stay? He played as big as a role in our transformation as Gerrard has, and could continue that progression.
Or, would he be persuaded to stay as a backroom staff member at Villa Park? That would surely increase the compensation package that the Bears could receive.
This isn’t about money though, and hopefully, we can be here in two weeks time with Gerrard and his team still at the helm.
