Richard Foster destroys Leon Balogun for Rangers v Brondby

Rangers were made to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw against Brondby this evening in the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard only made one change to his side, going with experience at the back and welcoming back Borna Barisic.

It was experience that had the Bears behind, with Leon Balogun heading into his own net, something Richard Foster has labelled “awful”.

Speaking during BBC coverage of the clash, Foster couldn’t believe his eyes as the defender headed into his own net.

“It’s awful defending,” he said.

“Balogun either gets his positioning wrong or doesn’t know where his man is. But he should, he’s holding onto him.”

Awful?

We have to be honest, it didn’t look very pretty.

Balogun was in-between a rock and a hard place as he thought if he didn’t head it, someone in a Brondby shirt will have.

In the end that was his downfall, as he stuck his head into the ball without any real conviction, and that is why it ended up in the back of the net.

The Nigerian international will have complained at those ahead of him for not getting in front of their man who flicked it on.

Once it had passed them, though, Balogun had to be ready and he simply wasn’t – something that usually ends up with the ball in your net in these situations.

It wasn’t good enough in every department, and it was more evidence of a fragile defence from set-piece situations – strange when you consider how effective we are in the other box.
