Alex Rae blasts Leon Balogun in Rangers clash v Brondby

Rangers travelled to Denmark this evening knowing three points against Brondby would put them in a brilliant position in the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard made one change to his side, switching up the defence and bringing in the experience of Borna Barisic.

Leon Balogun scored in the reverse fixture at Ibrox, but under pressure this evening, he was questioned by Alex Rae in the first half.

Speaking live on BT Sports, Rae blasted the Nigerian international after his decision to step up in the defensive line and chance his arm.

“Leon Balogun got quite lucky there,” he said.

“He tries to step up but the ball goes behind his back and it goes through to McGregor.”

Rangers

Lucky?

Given our less than impressive defensive record this season, we would love our backline to be certain in everything they do.

Balogun stepped up very quickly without really checking around him, and if the ball stuck on the wet surface we could have been in trouble.

The Nigerian international has been superb since arriving though, and regular football alongside Conor Goldson is slowly improving our overall record.

Given that Brondby had more of the ball in the first half, especially more than they did at Ibrox, the defence did make sure that they had no success or chances with it.

Balogun was a big part of that, but hopefully, there are no more lapses as the game goes on and we can leave with all three points.
