Barry Ferguson wants Rangers duo Steven Davis and Allan McGregor back in XI

Barry Ferguson wants to see Steven Gerrard bring Steven Davis and Allan McGregor back into the Rangers team as soon as possible.

Speaking in his column for the Daily Record, the former Gers skipper called for Gerrard to bring back the experienced duo ahead of Sunday’s trip to Motherwell.

Davis has played in 16 matches this season but in the last five league games he has only played for 115 minutes.

Meanwhile, McGregor has featured in ten with Gerrard preferring Jon McLaughlin and John Lundstram over two of his most experienced players.

However, Ferguson thinks it is time for them both to come back into the team.

He said: “I’m pretty sure there will be two very obvious solutions staring the Rangers boss in the face right now. Steven Davis and Allan McGregor.

“Whatever the reason, it does feel as if he’s almost keeping them back to use in the case of emergencies.

“Well, if that’s the case, then there’s no time like the present.

“If he believes they’re two of his most important players then – now that Celtic are breathing down his neck at the top of the table – this is precisely the moment to start hanging his hat on them all over again.”

Big call from Ferguson.

Now, given that Davis is 36 and McGregor is 39, there will come the point when Gerrard can no longer rely on either of them.

However, it seems as if Ferguson thinks that both should be back in the team for the moment as the Bears look to try and extend their gap at the top of the SPFL table.

We can see why Gerrard has used this duo less and less as he has to start thinking about the future, but perhaps it is time they both came back into the side.

Certainly, the Gers could do with steadying the ship a little bit, and if McGregor and Davis can do that, then it is probably time that they both came back into the side.

It will be intriguing to see what Gerrard decides to do on Sunday against Motherwell, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see his two most experienced players return to the starting XI.
