Sky Sports journalist: Newcastle set to move for out-of-work manager instead of Rangers boss Steven Gerrard
Newcastle United are unlikely to make a move for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard despite Steve Bruce’s exit from the Premier League club on Wednesday.
The 60-year-old left the Magpies by “mutual consent” on Wednesday morning, bringing an end to his tumultuous two-year reign.
Gerrard has been heavily linked with a move to Tyneside after their recent injection of cash following a high-profile takeover.

However, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie is not convinced that Newcastle will make a move to tempt him from Ibrox.
“Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard I think have been mentioned, Lucien Favre the former Borussia Dortmund head coach,” Downie said, as relayed by the Sky Sports Twitter account.
“So there are a few names the club are interested in and would be keen to bring here. They’re probably looking for someone that is out of work at the moment which would be a bit easier to bring in.”
Relief
It’s unlikely that Gerrard would want to make the move anyway, but it’s comforting to hear that there is unlikely to be a high-profile pursuit for the Gers boss any time soon.
Newcastle, with their newfound wealth, are one of the most attractive clubs around to various managers now, as they look to establish themselves as one of the best in England, and eventually Europe.
However, they are still in the mire at the bottom of the Premier League, so why would Gerrard want to swap the Europa League for a potential relegation fight?
But had Newcastle firmed up any interest in Gerrard, there would naturally have been a circus that followed it, potentially leading to players and fans feeling unsettled.
It looks as if the Magpies will go elsewhere, though, so everyone can rest easy.
