Barry Ferguson urges Rangers to keep hold of Connor Goldson

Barry Ferguson wants Rangers to keep hold of centre-back Connor Goldson beyond the end of the season.

The 28-year-old’s contract at the Ibrox expires in June and thus far there have been no reports suggesting that an extension is on the table.

He’s urging the Englishman to speak to Steven Gerrard and believes that for the Gers to continue winning trophies, retaining his services is paramount.

He said on Go Radio, “If Connor Goldson hasn’t heard anything then I would go and chap the manager’s door. If he really wants to stay then he can go and find out.

“He’s really important to Rangers so it is a concern. It (contract situation) will be a concern for the Rangers fans because I know they rate him highly.

“I think he was one of the top performers last year. If Rangers want to keep trying to win trophies then he’s one player they’ve got to keep.”

Must keep him

Ferguson makes really good points and it’s crucial that Rangers keep a hold of Goldson beyond this season.

He’s one of the leaders in the side and played a key role both on and off the pitch to guide Gers to the title last season.

Without him, they do not appear as solid and organised and Gerrard knows how important the English defender is to his side.

It’s shameful that the club have let him run his contract down right until the final few months.

These discussions should’ve been had with him at the start of the season and if he didn’t want to extend, then they should’ve moved him on and signed someone in his place.

Losing a player of Goldson’s calibre for free at an age where defenders usually hit their peak would be a massive disappointment, but it seems like it’s heading in that direction.
