Newcastle are still linked with a move for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, but have opened talks with Paulo Fonseca after Steve Bruce's sacking, according to The Telegraph.

Gerrard has been named among the list of potential managers, but it seems like their priority is to go for the former Shakhtar Donetsk and AS Roma boss.

Their preference appears to be for managers out of jobs currently, which is why there hasn't been any contact thus far with the Gers boss.

Fantastic

Gerrard will always be linked with a vacant Premier League job so that's something Gers fans will have to get used to.

Being a legend in the English top flight and achieving success this early in his managerial career only means that his stock is at an all-time high.

There are always talks about him being the future Liverpool manager, given his illustrious playing career on Merseyside.

However, with a world class coach like Jurgen Klopp at the helm, the Reds hierarchy may prefer Gerrard to get a taste of managing in the Premier League and the Newcastle job presented the perfect opportunity.

With super-rich owners and no pressure of immediate silverware, all he would have to do there was steady the ship while spending millions on each player as they scale the ranks.

That said, he doesn't seem like he's leaving Glasgow, at least for the time being, and we're all counting on him to win the 56th league title this season.

We're sure that one day he might leave, but that seems to be a few more years down the line.
