Steven Gerrard aims veiled dig at the SPFL ahead of the Rangers v Hearts game
Steven Gerrard has called the treatment of Hearts “very unfair” and revealed that he was pleased to them back in the SPFL with Rangers.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference [the Daily Record], the 41-year-old appeared to fire a dig at the SPFL for their treatment of the Edinburgh-based club when the 2019/20 season was cancelled.
When the league was called off, Hearts were relegated to the second division of Scottish football, but they have roared back and look like genuine title contenders now [The Guardian].

Gerrard said: “First and foremost, I think if you love the game [as] I do, I’m very pleased to see Hearts back in the top league because they were very unfairly treated during the Covid days.
“It’s great to see them back, and they’ve started the season ever so well. Robbie’s done a fantastic job, and I know he’s got fantastic support staff there.
Nice message from Gerrard.
Hearts are a huge club in Scotland, and we have to say that the SPFL is a better place with them than without them.
They have had a strong start to the season and could leap to the top of the league with a win at Ibrox, so this won’t be an easy game for the Gers at all.
It is clear from these comments that Gerrard was unhappy with the SPFL for relegating them in the 2019/20 season, but you could argue that it has actually worked in their favour.

It is very early days in the title race, but as it stands, the Bears have to see Hearts as a threat, and this is a massive game.
If they win, then they could take an early command on the title race, but if they don’t and Hearts win, the title race could be blown wide open.
Gerrard clearly respects Robbie Neilson’s team, and we are looking forward to watching this clash at Ibrox; we would hope that the Gers can win.
In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart has had a dig at David Edgar on Twitter.
