Jim White claims Steven Gerrard is ‘extremely happy’ at Rangers amid Newcastle United links

Steven Gerrard is “extremely happy” at Rangers amid speculation linking him with a move to Newcastle United, according to Jim White.

The broadcaster, speaking via talkSPORT [11/10/21], delivered his verdict after a discussion was initiated over whether the Gers boss could succeed Steve Bruce at Newcastle after the Magpies changed ownership last week.

“I do know for a fact he is extremely happy with life at Rangers,” White said.

“Do Newcastle have a global support? I would suggest not, but Rangers do.

“He is now immortalised in the eyes of these Rangers supporters because he stopped Celtic winning 10 [Premiership titles in a row] so there is an argument that could be run that he has done his job, he’s stopped them, would it be time for a move to another club?

“And this isn’t any other club, this is Newcastle under new Saudi ownership.”

Newcastle’s profile has skyrocketed over the past week as their incredible new wealth is laid bare.

With reported backing from the Saudi Arabian Public Investment fund, Newcastle are considered to have the wealthiest ‘owners’ in the world.

That means they can attract a much higher-calibre of players as they plot to shake-up the Premier League and go for glory in the next few years.

However, they cannot shoot straight up to the elite, and they may face a relegation battle this season.

Would Gerrard swap a European campaign with Rangers, and potentially more trophies, for a fight to avoid the English second-tier?

It’s unlikely.

Inevitably, Gerrard will test his managerial talents in the Premier League, but that looks a little way off at the moment, and will most likely be at his boyhood club Liverpool, not Newcastle.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was left stunned by what this Gers player did on Saturday.
