Danny Murphy suggests Steven Gerrard won't leave Rangers to join Newcastle
Steven Gerrard won’t leave Rangers to join Newcastle United, according to popular football pundit Danny Murphy.
While speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy, who also appears on BBC Match of the Day, has claimed that it will be a big risk for Gerrard to move to the Tyneside club.
According to reports from Sky Sports, Amanda Staveley met with Steve Bruce and the Newcastle United squad for the first time on Monday.
Bruce is expected to be relieved of his duties this week before Sunday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
Gerrard is reportedly on the three-man shortlist for the Newcastle job, the other two being Brighton boss Graham Potter and Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.
However, Murphy believes that Gerrard won’t take the Magpies job if he is being offered the role as it will be a big risk.
“I don’t think Gerrard would [leave Rangers for Newcastle]”, said Murphy on talkSPORT.
“It would be too much of a risk for him as they are in a relegation battle.”
Gerrard has done a terrific job at Rangers since taking charge at the club in 2018 and guided them to SPFL triumph last season.
Rangers are top of the league at the moment and the Gers are facing a crucial top-of-the-table clash against Hearts this weekend after the international break.
While Gerrard would fancy moving to the Premier League at some point in his career, and a move to Newcastle could appeal to him as well (better wage package), changing clubs now could have a bad effect on his managerial career.
Newcastle are struggling badly at the moment in the Premier League and it will not be a wise decision to take up the challenge now. Gerrard can end the season at Ibrox with another trophy and he will still be in high demand next summer.
