Steve Bruce expects to be sacked as Newcastle manager this week with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard on the shortlist to replace him, per The Sun.

Current assistant manager Graeme Jones is said to be set to take charge temporarily, but Bruce's unpopularity has almost made his job untenable.

The other two managers that are understood to be on the top of their priorities are Brighton manager Graham Potter and Leicester City and former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers.

Is there a chance?

Bruce has been linked with the exit door for months, but former owner Mike Ashley did not want to pay him compensation as his plans have always been to sell the club.

Now, with PIF in the picture, they have made promises to strengthen the team, and it starts with a change of manager.

Gerrard, thus far, has proven his credentials and has brought Rangers back to the summit of Scottish football after a decade of pain.

Rangers

He is also an ex-Premier League player so knows the league inside out and we can understand why a club like Newcastle would be willing to take a punt on him.

The former Liverpool captain also would want to manage the Reds one day, so a move to St. James' Park could serve as an audition for the Anfield hot seat.

We're hoping that they go for the likes of Potter or Rodgers as they've got experience of managing in the Premier League so it will not be as risky an appointment as Gerrard's.
