Andy Goldstein: Steven Gerrard would be mad not to take the Rangers job

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been linked with the Newcastle United job after a consortium took over the Premier League club.

According to Daily Mail, the Bears boss could leave Ibrox at the end of the season and is intrigued by what is set to happen at St James’ Park after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund completed a £300million takeover.

TalkSPORT Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent have been discussing the reports linking Gerrard with Newcastle, and the former insists he would be mad not to switch Glasgow for Tyneside if the call comes.

As shared on their official YouTube channel, Goldstein asked Bent: “Steven Gerrard, do you see him do that job?.”

Bent: “It’s a strange one in terms of experience, but he’s done a fantastic job at Rangers last year. He’s a Premier League legend, he’s on the come up as well in terms of his managerial career, had success already. I think the Newcastle fans will be happy with that.”

Andy: “Is it a step up, Rangers to Newcastle?”

Darren: “Yes. In this environment we’re in now. Yes. Because you look at the investment.”

Andy: “He’d be mad not to take that job.”

Bent: “Any other manager would be silly not to take that job.”

Temptation?

Gerrard is in his fourth season at Rangers, and he definitely has the ambition to manage in the Premier League.

Ideally, he would love to take charge of his old club Liverpool, but that is not happening anytime soon with Jurgen Klopp still very much around.

However, the Newcastle owners could be keen to take a punt on him after his achievements at Ibrox.

With more than enough cash to buy some of the best players in the game, Newcastle could be challenging for the Premier League and Champions League very soon, and it could be tough for Gerrard to reject them if they offer him such a job.

He will not be at Rangers forever, and given their financial limitations, an opportunity to join the Premier League’s latest moneybags would be very hard to reject.
