Ally McCoist: Rangers & Celtic need to win in Europa League tonight
Ally McCoist has insisted that Rangers and Celtic desperately need to pick up three points in the Europa League this evening.
The Bears have travelled to the Czech Republic to take on Sparta Prague after the disappointing opening defeat against Lyon.
McCoist also previewed Celtic against Bayer Leverkusen, insisting they’re facing a worst German side than the one the Gers faced a couple of years ago.
Speaking on talkSPORT via the Daily Record this morning, McCoist made the big claim ahead of the matches.
“Both teams have got to take something after the disappointment of the opening games,” he said.
” Celtic were unlucky – to go to Real Betis and score three goals, you expect to get something. And, to be honest, Rangers were beaten by a better side in Lyon, they definitely were.
“I think both Rangers and Celtic could seriously do with something tonight.”
Tonight is one of those games where the performance simply doesn’t matter, bringing home three points is all that is needed.
Thankfully, for Steven Gerrard’s side, that is exactly what they have done in almost every single outing already this season.
Rangers have been nowhere near their best, but have been picking up three points in most weeks, and that needs to be taken into Europe.
Sparta Prague will be no pushovers, and it will be a hostile evening around the ground, but that all must be used as motivation.
Picking up three points here ahead of the Brondby clash would hand the Gers real momentum as they hunt for qualification from the group.
McCoist knows what it takes having been in this situation, and he will know better than most that not winning any of your opening two games will never help your cause of qualification.
