Keith Hackett shares verdict on Fashion Sakala goal for Rangers v Motherwell

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive Rangers columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Keith Hackett has labelled Rangers as “very fortunate” after their 1-1 draw against Motherwell on Sunday.

Fashion Sakala scored his first competitive goal for the Bears at Ibrox, but was clearly in an offside position as he headed home.

Hackett believes that the responsibility falls on the linesman, who has simply missed the major decision from behind his flag.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Hackett said, “It’s offside.

“This is offside. He can’t be offside from the corner, but it is nodded on. It’s from the head-on, he is in the offside position which was his starting position.

“He headed it in the back of the net and was offside. Very, very fortunate. I think in those situations, you’re looking more at the assistant referee – he’s missed it.”

No complaints.

It doesn’t take too many views to see that Sakala was clearly offside.

Motherwell can count themselves unfortunate, but it was about time that we got away with one of these calls.

Steven Gerrard has been vocal that officials need to be funded better by the SPFL to allow them to turn full time as well as receive more training.

That would surely benefit everyone in the Scottish Premiership, but the longer that doesn’t happen, the more of these decisions will be made.

Sakala won’t mind, and hopefully this can give him the confidence to kick on and start firing on all cylinders in the coming weeks and months.
