Motherwell Super Fan delivers verdict ahead of Rangers clash
This is part of a regular series from our panel of Super Fans on upcoming Rangers games. Ahead of Rangers’ game against Motherwell in the SPFL, we caught up with Motherwell Super Fan @MFCPodcast86.
Rangers host Motherwell at Ibrox as they look to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat in the Europa League to Lyon.
The Gers sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after picking up 12 points from their first five league games.
However, the Steelmen have started the season well and sit in fourth place, so it could be a tough test for Steven Gerrard’s men.
Ahead of the clash, we caught up with @MFCPodcast86, who gave us his thoughts on the upcoming game.
What have you made of Rangers’ start to the season?
It sounds a bit dismissive, but I haven’t seen a great deal, in all honesty. I watched the European games and then the Celtic game a few weeks ago. I can’t say I was overly impressed with Rangers’ performance in any of these games, perhaps some of that intensity from last season has been missing a bit, but it’s still very early doors. I doubt many Rangers fans will complain if the table is the same at the end of game 38.
What have you made of your start to the season?
We made a pretty uninspiring start to the campaign with the Premier Sports Cup group games and then exiting the competition a few weeks into the season, but we’ve bounced back very well. Three straight wins in the league and Saturday’s win over Aberdeen was our best display so far – there’s a feeling of optimism about the fans that hasn’t been there for a while.
Who should Rangers fear?
Certainly not the atmosphere from the visiting fans as you’ve not let any in. Seriously, though, Kevin Van Veen has shown signs that he could be a brilliant addition to our squad. He was out for a bit with injury but returned on Saturday and scored the opener before setting up the second goal. He’s a real fan favourite already, and hopefully, with more games, he’ll continue to get better.
Who are you scared of in this Rangers team?
Alfredo Morelos is a constant handful and a proven goal scorer, the sort of player you’d love to have on your own team.
Who is the weak link in this Rangers side?
I don’t know if I could identify one that easily; I’ve seen Connor Goldson get a bit complacent at times, but I wouldn’t say he was a weak link.
Who will win the league?
I think it’ll be very close this season; it’s already been shown that Celtic and Rangers will be really challenged on the road, especially – it’ll come down to who gets through those games better.
It’s never a game I’m optimistic ahead of, but we’re in decent form. Hopefully, we have a go and spring a surprise – I’ll go 1-1.
A good game in store.
The Gers have not had the greatest of starts to the season in terms of their performances, but they are still top of the league.
Motherwell head to Ibrox, knowing that they are in good form, and that could prove to be tricky for the Gers.
As @MFCPodcast86 identified, Van Veen is someone who the Bears need to watch out for, and he has started the season well.
In eight games, the 30-year-old has scored two goals and provided a further three assists as he settles into life at Fir Park.
It should be a fascinating game, and we can’t wait to see how Gerrard’s men respond to that poor performance on Thursday in front of another packed home crowd.
In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has aimed a dig at Stewart Robertson.
