Ally McCoist slams Ryan Kent for role in Rangers conceding goal v Lyon
Ally McCoist blasted Ryan Kent for giving up possession ahead of Karl Toko Ekambi’s goal for Lyon in their XXX Rangers on Thursday night.
Kent has endured a tough start to the campaign and he failed to allay critics when he gifted possession to Lyon in the middle of the park prior to Ekambi’s stunning strike.
Speaking at half-time on BT Sport 3, McCoist waxed lyrical about the Lyon winger’s goal but also bemoaned Kent’s role in it due to his sloppy play.
“Kent’s poor in possession here,” McCoist said as he assessed the first goal of the game.
“He gets caught, there’s no excuse for that.
“Ekambi gets the ball and I know [John Lundstram] is trying to force him out wide but make no mistake about it, the stepovers are excellent and the finish, from this angle, is absolutely first class.”
Not good enough
Kent was probably our best player against Lyon.
That’s nothing to shout from the rooftops about because the standard was fairly low but Kent did offer some impetus going forward every now and then and he did look as though he wanted to try.
Unfortunately, he let himself down massively when he gifted possession to Lyon prior to Ekambi’s goal.
It was a stunning goal by the Lyon star, let’s not forget that. He still had a lot to do and John Lundstram was woeful in his attempt to stop the shot.
But it stemmed from Kent losing the ball in the middle of the park. He has to be cleverer than that.
We’ve had such a stop-start start to the season.
While we may have beaten Celtic and won a few other league games, we’ve struggled badly in Europe.
Steven Gerrard has a lot to sort out.
