Filip Helander is now the main man in the Rangers defence
Rangers man Filip Helander had the dream Old Firm match last Sunday and continued that on international duty this week.
The big Swede scored the winning goal as he connected with a corner from Borna Barisic to plant a sublime header into the back of the net to send Ibrox wild.
He was also pretty solid at the back, and we think it is time he is recognised as the Gers’ best defender.
Connor Goldson has not had the best start to the season, and his contract expires at Ibrox at the end of this season.
Therefore, we believe that with James Tavernier back, Leon Balogun should simply return to the bench despite his own heroics at right-back in the old Firm.
Helander is an experienced international centre-back and is in better form than those around him and is thriving this season.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion man is a big favourite of Steven Gerrard, but now it looks as though he may be slowly dropping down the pecking order.
The big Swede has been described as a “leader” in the past by Steven Gerrard, and we believe that he has earned his shot at replacing Goldson as the main man in the team for the short term [Glasgow Times].
However, it remains to be seen if Gerrard will do this or if he will stick with Goldson.
