Rangers agree £3m option to buy for Hajduk Split to take Nikola Katic next year
Nikola Katic left on loan on deadline day to join Hajduk Split in Croatia but the defender may have played his final match for Rangers, according to GlasgowLive.
The news website reports that while Katic, 24, still hopes to have a future at Ibrox, the Gers have agreed to let Hajduk have the option to sign the centre-back next summer for £3million.
It is understood that is more than what the Light Blues paid for Katic in 2018 but Steven Gerrard still sees him as a long-term option in his defence.
It makes sense
There was some confusion about Katic’s move to Hajduk Split.
Rangers announced they had an option to recall Katic from his loan spell in Croatia in January while Hajduk said they have the option to sign him permanently.
It seems, however, that Hajduk’s option to buy Katic is merely there to appease them and may not actually be something that will happen.
Hajduk may want to trigger that clause next year and they have every right to. However, Katic could always turn around and say, ‘I’m not signing a contract with you, I want to stay at Rangers’.
There’s nothing they can do about that.
The fee is there in case the Gers feel as though Katic hasn’t proven himself in Croatia so while there’s a chance the centre-back may never play for us again, it’s unlikely that is the case.
We wish Nikola all the best at Hajduk Split.
It’s a good move for him as he’s joined a team that will be out for silverware this season and potentially in the race for the Croatian title.
Do us proud.
