Neil McCann: Steven Gerrard should be concerned despite Rangers 4-2 win v Ross County

Neil McCann believes Steven Gerrard has issues to fix at Rangers despite Sunday’s 4-2 Premiership win over Ross County.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene [22/08/21] after the Gers beat Malky Mackay’s men, McCann expressed unease at what he saw at Victoria Park.

” I think it’s a concern [conceding goals after last season’s record] and it should be a concern for Steven Gerrard,” McCann said.

“I think the foundation and bedrock for Rangers’ success last season was that high-press energy and to be defensively solid, not just the backline but they were working ever so hard to stop teams.

“They’ve conceded a few, we saw a number of times today the midfield runs going in behind the defence.

“That needs to sharpen up, but I think they’re starting to show signs they’re getting there.”

Slow start

Rangers got the 2021/22 campaign off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win over Livingston at Ibrox [31/07/21] but three dismal defeats followed.

A 1-0 loss to Dundee United was sandwiched by 2-1 reversals to Malmo in the Champions League as the Gers defence was breached five times in three games.

That defensive vulnerability is not something Gerrard is used to seeing in his side.

Rangers conceded just 13 times in 38 Premiership games last season but they are nearly at a quarter of that total already.

However, heading into Sunday’s game, the Gers did keep successive clean sheets against Dunfermline Athletic and Alashkert.

That should have restored some confidence into the backline, though the standard of opposition was fairly low.

Clean sheets could be vital this week as Gerrard prepares his team for huge encounters with Alashket and Celtic.
