Neil McCann: Rangers handed stroke of luck with Malmo sending off

Rangers got extremely lucky when Malmo’s Bonke Innocent got sent off for a challenge on Connor Goldson, claims Neil McCann.

Gers opened the scoring through Alfredo Morelos and were headed for half-time with a 1-0 lead. However, it proved to be in vain as two second-half goals for Malmo saw them win 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on aggregate.

Just before the break, the hosts were handed a huge lifeline when Malmo went down to ten men.

Discussing the game on the half-time show, the former Gers winger said on Rangers TV, “It was a huge stroke of luck for Rangers.

“At first I thought it was a bit naughty. The referee’s position was poor but this is a huge advantage for Rangers.”

Shocking

It was a horrendous decision and referee Slavko Vincic must have been absolutely embarrassed by it when he went and reviewed it at the break.

He was called into action ten minutes prior to that when he rightly handed out a yellow to goalkeeper Allan McGregor, but this is certainly not a decision any professional would be making.

It gave us a lifeline only one paper as we came out in the second half looking like we were the ones who had a player down.

Within five second-half minutes, Antonio Colak hit two lowly-struck shots that beat McGregor completely and absolutely silenced the Ibrox crowd.

In the first half the stadium was buzzing and from 54th minute onward, there was an eerie silence until we started to muster a few good passes in the final third.

We’ve got to be embarrassed by this performance as it’s completely uncharacteristic of everything we’ve loved of this team over the last two seasons.

These last three games have been shambolic and we really need a miracle to turn things around and we need it done quickly.
