James McFadden believes Charlie Mulgrew should have been sent off against Rangers

James McFadden believes that Dundee United defender Charlie Mulgrew should have been sent off against Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

The former Scottish international striker told BBC Sportscene that he thinks the Gers were hard done by in the 1-0 defeat, and that Mulgrew should have been sent off for denying Alfredo Morelos a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The former Celtic man hauled the Colombian to the ground after he had touched the ball around Mulgrew, but referee Don Robertson thought it was only worthy of a yellow card.

Rangers

McFadden, though, disagreed [BBC Sportscene, 07/08/2021, 26:06].

He said: “When you see it at full speed, it looks to me that Morelos is going clear. He takes a brilliant touch, and [Ryan] Edwards is covering, but I think that Morelos is clear, and he’s going into the box.

“I think he’s favourite and can get a shot away. Edwards is in a good position, and maybe that’s why but he only makes up the ground because Mulgrew makes the foul.

“I think that Morelos is going through on goal there. It’s a tough one, though, and the referee has got one look at it.

“But I think he’s got it wrong.”

McFadden is correct!

In real-time, it appeared as if Morelos was in on goal after a delightful touch, and Mulgrew got away with one, in our opinion.

If he had been shown a red card, the game would have changed, and the Gers might have had a better chance of taking something from the match.

However, this red card still can’t disguise a poor performance from the Gers, who have lost more league games already than they managed in the entirety of last season.

Rangers

Steven Gerrard was not happy with his side, and we need to see a reaction from them on Tuesday in that huge Champions League clash [Sky Sports].

Hopefully, they respond because this display wasn’t good enough.

Yes, Mulgrew should have been sent off, but Rangers had to do more to win the game, and they failed to do that, so Tuesday is an even bigger game than it was as the Gers look to bounce back.

In other Rangers news, one of the club’s apparent transfer targets was left out of his team’s latest match.
