Dave King: Rangers to use potential £70m windfall to strengthen squad

Dave King claims that whatever money Rangers could make from qualifying for the Champions League group stages will be reinvested back in the squad.

Rangers’ hopes of making the group stages this season are on the line, as it stands, after Steven Gerrard’s men lost 2-1 to Malmo in the first leg of their qualifier on Tuesday night.

Steven Davis’ late goal keeps hopes alive while the hunt for another Premiership title is also guaranteed to help the money keep rolling in at Ibrox, according to ex-chairman King.

Rangers

“This could be a pivotal period in Rangers’ history because they have the chance of another title and two Champions League qualifications which will bring in potentially £60million to £70million,” King told the Rangers Connection podcast, as quoted by The Times.

“That money will go straight back into the team because you have shareholders who don’t take dividends.

“So, if you are able to win the league then you know from mid-May that you’re straight into the group phase and you can take your team to the next level. This is the most exciting season because there is so much potential and that will be huge motivation to Steven [Gerrard].”

Massive season

If King is right then Rangers fans have a lot to look forward to because in Scottish football, that potential £60-70million windfall is game-changing money for any team, including us.

Let’s say we reach the Champions League group stages this season, win the league and then next season, make the group stages again. Gerrard and Ross Wilson will be able to go crazy in the transfer market and really strengthen this squad.

As it stands, we have Malmo in our way of making the group stages of the Champions League this season and a one-goal deficit is not ideal.

Gerrard’s men didn’t perform as well as we know they can in Malmo so it’s down to them to improve drastically at Ibrox for the second leg.

Davis’ goal kept hopes alive but they really need to finish the job and, ideally, keep a clean sheet so the attackers don’t have such a difficult job.

King’s claim about how that money will be used is exciting.

But we need to win it first before getting too carried away.

In other Rangers news, Gerrard is predicted to make three changes to his starting line-up for the match against Dundee United.
