Rangers winger Jordan Jones set to join Wigan Athletic on loan

Rangers winger Jordan Jones is set to join English League One club Wigan Athletic on a loan deal, according to Will Unwin.

The Guardian journalist, writing via his personal Twitter profile on Monday evening [02/08/21], claims the 26-year-old is set to head down south on a temporary basis.

Unwin wrote: “Jordan Jones will join Wigan from Rangers, I am told.”

Another loan?

The Northern Ireland international spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan in the same division, making 20 League One appearances including one in the play-offs as Sunderland lost out in the semi-final to Lincoln City.

After struggling to make a breakthrough at Ibrox since his 2019 move from Kilmarnock, it was widely expected that Jones would leave this summer on a permanent basis.

However, it looks like he will be loaned out once again, with a lack of permanent suitors surely the reason.

Rangers will have set a certain fee for him, and it appears that no club was willing to meet it.

But with the Gers clearly keen to get him off the books for another season, with competition on the wing fierce, the club are happy to sanction another temporary deal.

Rangers

The terms of the deal have not been fully disclosed, but it would be assumed that Wigan are paying a big portion of his wages, if not all, while there may also be a loan fee.

It’s not likely to be much given they are in the English third-tier, but any amount could help Steven Gerrard secure more signings as he looks to defend last season’s Premiership crown and bids to make a major mark in European competition again.

Hopefully, Jones impresses at Wigan and they will come calling next summer to stump up a transfer fee for the attacker.
