Rangers want to sign Manchester United teenager Charlie McCann before Saturday

Steven Gerrard wants to sign Manchester United midfielder Charlie McCann before Rangers kick off their title defence on Saturday, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reports that the Gers will have to pay a fee for the 19-year-old, who’s in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.

It is understood the Gers are “poised” to sign the “exciting midfield prospect” after Gerrard was made aware of his reputation at Man United.

Rangers

The Record adds that Gerrard wants to make the Republic of Ireland youth international a Rangers player before they play their Premiership opener against Livingston in just over 48 hours’ time.

Extra depth

Rangers could do with that extra option in the centre of the park, especially after Nnamdi Ofoborh’s start to life at Rangers was hindered by a heart issue.

At the end of last season, we saw Bongani Zungu leave at the end of his loan while we also witnessed Ryan Jack consistently struggle with injuries.

John Lundstram has been signed on a free transfer but it would not hurt to have that extra body in there to add extra depth.

McCann can do that.

The former Coventry prospect is yet to make a senior appearance in his career but he’s clearly done enough to impress Gerrard with his performances for Man United’s Under-23s.

However, Coventry’s former academy manager Richard Stevens described McCann as “unbelievable” when he left the Midlands club to join Man United in 2017 [Coventry’s official website].

Last season, the Coventry-born sensation played 17 times in Premier League 2, scored four goals and supplied three assists.

He can play in a deep-lying midfield role, as a central midfielder or even out on the left-wing, based on stats by transfermarkt.

On Man United’s website, he’s described as a “creative ball-playing midfielder”.

He’s one we’re excited about, for sure.

In other Rangers news, Gerrard has given the go-ahead for this forward to be sold this summer.
