Rangers urged to move swiftly for £8.5m-rated Joey Veerman

Rangers have been told to act quickly in their pursuit of Joey Veerman or risk seeing his value skyrocket.

According to The Daily Record, Heerenveen are holding out for £8.5million to let go of the midfielder and have already turned down a £4.2million offer from Hellas Verona.

However, Scott Calderwood, who is part of the backroom team at Dutch second-tier outfit Den Bosch, expects the 22-year-old’s price to shoot up if the Gers don’t act quickly.

Speaking to The Daily Record he said, “He’s not the typical Scottish midfielder who goes from box to box but Joey could thrive under Steven Gerrard and the way his team play.

“His next move is important. He’s ready to become an international player for Holland. If he keeps developing the way he is, his value is only going to go up.

“Holland have already got some good players in the middle of the pitch but I think if he had been playing for a bigger club he’d have had a call-up by now. Then the money being discussed becomes a lot for any club.”

Make a move

Verona are unlikely to make a better offer, being so far off Heerenveen’s valuation of the player, so that means the road to sign Veerman is relatively clear for us.

£8.5million may be slightly on the steeper side, but the Dutchman has got plenty of years left in his tank and could well be worth four times that amount in a couple of years – making him a vital asset to have on our books.

He would add the much-needed balance to our midfield and be the kind of player who’s not content with just sitting deep and knitting things 60 yards away from goal, but one who thrives in the final third by creating chances and scoring goals.

Veerman is much like how Gerrard was during his playing days so it’s probably why the Gers boss rates him so highly and is keen on bringing him to the Ibrox.

We’ll have to wait and see what the club decide to do, but this is a signing we must make at all costs.
