Kevin Thomson reveals he dreams of becoming Rangers someday

Kelty Hearts manager Kevin Thomson has revealed he dreams of becoming Rangers boss someday having taken charge of the Light Blues’ youth sides.

The former Gers midfielder left his position as the Premiership side’s Colts boss in May to take over the newly-promoted side, but was back at Ibrox on Sunday to cover the friendly game against Real Madrid for Rangers TV.

Thomson has been tasked with taking the Scottish League Two side to the next level, with leading them to the League One, or at least keeping them up the mission.

Rangers

The 36-year-old hopes to be in the Ibrox dugout in the future, admitting to the Daily Record that is his ambition.

Thomson said: “I had to take the plunge and I would like to think the door will always be open for me to go back. I am not saying there will always be a job there for me but it’s a club that has always looked after me.

“So I left with a heavy heart – but I’ve left before when I was a player, moving down to Middlesbrough, which never worked out for me, and I got an opportunity to go back. Hopefully this time, it will work out for me and you never know, I might be back one day.

“That’s my ambition. I was like that as a player. I wanted to play at the highest level I possibly could, to win trophies and work with the best players and under the best managers. I achieved all that at Rangers. I’m the same as a manager. I want to work with the best players and in the top leagues.”

One for the future?

Steven Gerrard has been a huge hit since becoming Rangers boss, helping us land title number 55 last season.

However, the Liverpool legend will not be at Ibrox forever, and a capable replacement would be needed in a couple of seasons from now.

Thomson knows the Bears having spent three-and-a-half seasons at Glasgow and ending his stint with two Scottish Premier League titles, a Scottish Cup and two Scottish League Cups.

Rangers

He was part of the side that reached the 2008 UEFA Cup Final and could put his name in the frame for the job with some impressive work at Kelty Hearts.

The former midfielder has taken up a challenging gig and is now constantly under a lot of pressure that life as Rangers Colts boss would not have prepared him for.

We are keen to see how he fares, and with his team likely to come up against the big boys in the Cup competitions, he could have the chance to make a name for himself sooner rather than later through upsets.

Being a former Rangers star is not a criterion to become a Rangers manager, though, and Thomson knows he has to deliver in the League Two and further up the pyramid to have a chance of fulfilling his lofty ambitions.
