Stephen Craigan: Rangers might have to get rid of Nikola Katic and George Edmundson

Stephen Craigan claims Rangers might have to get rid of Nikola Katic and George Edmundson because of the size of Steven Gerrard’s squad.

The BT Sport pundit feels Rangers are overloaded with centre-backs and can’t keep them all happy and probably don’t need them all given how good they were defensively last season.

This means that for Craigan, both Edmundson and Katic are at risk of leaving Ibrox this summer [the Scottish Sun].

He said: “Gerrard has to get his squad right and in the best possible frame of mind for the campaign ahead.

“It’s fair to say he’s got a sizeable squad that will likely need to be trimmed a bit in the coming weeks.

“The two areas of the team that stand out for me where Rangers are overloaded are in central defence and central midfield.

“The defensive record they had last season is proof of that. I can’t help but think at least one or two will have to go on loan or be sold, and the two could be Katic and Edmundson.”

Katic and Edmundson’s future in doubt?

Katic has been an important player for Rangers when he has played, but they didn’t miss him last season and conceded just 13 league goals, so perhaps, it is time for him to move on or at least leave the club on loan to get some game time.

Edmundson spent the second half of last season on loan at Derby County after only making two appearances during the first half of the season.

This suggests that the 23-year-old is not that high up the pecking order, and another loan or a permanent transfer away might be the way forward for Edmundson as well.

This would be a shame as Katic has been described as “fantastic” by Gerarrd in the past [the Daily Record]. Edmundson has also been called “fantastic” by Nicky Law Snr [the Daily Record].

So they have made an impression at Rangers, but maybe it is their time to at least leave the club on loan and get some valuable game time.

In other Rangers news, the Gers might have to fend off some Premier League interest for 24-year-old star.
