Nnamdi Ofoborh to wait for Rangers debut following heart issue
Midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh will have to wait for his Rangers debut after recent scans revealed an issue with his heart.
Having not been seen in the matchday squads for the Light Blues two friendly games thus far, manager Steven Gerrard has moved to clear things up on the unavailability of the 21-year-old after the Arsenal match.
The Rangers boss has revealed that Ofoborh is likely to spend some time out before he returns to action.
Gerrard told Rangers TV after the game: “I don’t think you’ll see him in the short term. Unfortunately, something has flagged up with his ECG, which is the heart test. We’ve got top medical people here at the club now and we check all the players thoroughly from head to toe when they arrive
“Unfortunately there’s been a bit of a red flag with a heart issue so he’s going to see some specialists in the coming weeks and we need to do more tests before we move forward.
“It’s disappointing and frustrating but we’ll have to manage and cope. The important thing is the player’s health, which we’ll obviously focus on first and foremost. Of course, it’s disappointing and frustrating for the player but I spoke to him yesterday and told him to keep smiling and be patient.”
Tough blow
The 21-year-old moved to Ibrox on a free transfer from Bournemouth this summer on a four-year deal after agreeing to a pre-contract in February, and would have been eager to begin life as a Rangers player as soon as possible.
However, that is not going to happen soon, and we would have to nervously wait for the next step once he sees the specialist.
We were all shocked after Inter Milan midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the clash between Denmark and Finland at the European Championship, with an undetected heart issue putting his life at risk.
Thankfully, Rangers discovered Ofoborh’s issue during tests, and hopefully, it is nothing serious.
The Nigerian youth international helped Wycombe Wanderers seal promotion to the Championship during a loan spell in 2019-20, featuring in 21 league games and scoring their goal of the season.
He returned to them during the second half of last season having struggled for regular playing minutes at Bournemouth in the first half, and his Rangers career has not gotten off to a great start.
Ofoborh will now look to put all that behind him once he returns to action, and we are looking forward to how things go.
