Alex McLeish picks out Stephen Kelly as Rangers one to watch
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has singled out Rangers sensation Stephen Kelly as one to watch at Ibrox this season.
The young midfielder has come off the bench in both pre-season friendlies so far against Tranmere and Partick Thistle.
McLeish believes that playing with the likes of Steven Davis will only help the development of Kelly ahead of the new season.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Stephen Kelly.
“I saw that there were really good remarks, and he has had a really good game. He was playing with his mentor – Steven Davis.
“They are quite similar in style, and if he wants to learn from anybody, there is no one better than Davis.”
Kelly has been growing somewhat of a name for himself in the past couple of years away from Ibrox.
McLeish has always tipped him for the top, and it could be time for Steven Gerrard to consider handing him a consistent spot in the squad.
After spells at Ayr United and Ross County, the 21-year-old is ready for the Scottish Premiership and what better place than the champions?
There won’t be a consistent starting spot at Ibrox, but Gerrard won’t be afraid to bring Kelly off the bench if needed in games.
John Lundstram, Glen Kamara and Davis will clearly take priority, but there could be a real opportunity for Kelly to prove himself in all competitions next season.
