Alex McLeish hails Jermain Defoe effect during pre-season

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish was left thrilled by Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side for the pre-season friendly with Partick Thistle.

The Bears won 1-0 this week, with Cedric Itten scoring the winner in the final 10 minutes as pre-season was kicked off.

Jermain Defoe started the game with numerous academy talents, something McLeish believes will have been “amazing” for them.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “That was amazing.

“Playing with Jermain, that’s marvellous for the kids. We felt that he could be kicked on as a mentor for many young players at the club.

“I know Steven Gerrard will share things with his staff, and who better to share things with than one of the best strikers that we’ve ever seen in British football.”

Sensational.

Can you imagine these young players not only starting for the Bears, but doing so alongside Defoe.

The veteran striker has smashed the Premier League throughout his career, as well as doing it on the international stage for England.

Gerrard trusts the striker with everything he has, and Defoe has started hs coaching role with flying colours.

The Light Blues are blessed with options in the final third, and they are surely only going to get better in this set-up.

There are going to be more opportunities during this pre-season, and it is up to those younger players to prove that they have what it takes to succeed at Ibrox.
