Alex McLeish: Glenn Middleton set for make-or-break Rangers loan exit
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has insisted it could be a make-or-break season for Rangers winger Glenn Middleton this year.
Despite starting the pre-season friendly against Partick Thistle last night, the youngster is expected to return to St Johnstone on loan once again.
McLeish believes it is the right move, as he isn’t guaranteed to play every single week at Ibrox under Steven Gerrard.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It will be good for him to get regular football again.
“There’s no point being at Rangers and not making the bench or even the squad. He will play every week.
“Star of the future? We will have to wait and see.
McLeish went on to admit that it would be a make-or-break season for Middleton, and it is hard to disagree.
It was a surprise to see the young Scottish star in the starting XI in that 1-0 win last night, and he showed some great glimpses of pace on the ball.
Whether that would be enough to compete against the likes of Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Fashion Sakala every week, is unlikely.
Gerrard giving him minutes in the game last night will have given Middleton confidence though, and more drive than ever to prove himself under Callum Davidson next season.
We wish Middleton all the luck in the world, it is time to go out and earn another contract at Ibrox.
