Steven Gerrard aims dig at 'one or two' Rangers players ahead of pre-season training

Steven Gerrard was unhappy with how “one or two” of his Rangers players returned from their summer break.

The Gers boss speaking to Rangers TV [via GlasgowLive] revealed that most of his players had returned in top shape, but he was unhappy with a couple of unnamed individuals.

Rangers first pre-season match is on July 5 and they start their league campaign on August 7, so whoever these players are need to catch up quickly, and Gerrard indicated that he would be doing all he could to get them to the fitness levels required.

He said: “The majority of them have come back really well. There’s a lot of elite footballers here who look after themselves really well.

“We want the players to have two or three weeks down, but they’ve had work from Jordan (Milsom) and the fitness staff to do, and the majority have done very well. That’s why they are elite footballers.

“The majority are in a good place and come back well, there’s one or two [who’ve] had a good summer, but we’ll get them on the right page, and they’ll be ready to go come that first game.”

Anything to worry about?

Although the Gers’ first pre-season match is not far off, judging by Gerrard’s comments, these players could be ready to contribute.

He clearly is unhappy with the players in question, but not naming them is clever man-management and should keep the dressing room on his side.

Rangers were absolutely incredible in the 2020/21 campaign as they went the whole league season unbeaten and only conceded 13 goals.

Gerrard will not want those standards to slip, and though most of his players have returned in peak condition, it is a shame that a couple haven’t, and you would expect them to be whipped back into shape.

This is a huge season for Rangers as they look to defend their title, and though this seems like a little thing, Gerrard needs to sort it out quickly ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The players in question should have also taken some personal responsibility and looked after themselves better in their break.
