Michael Ball: Andros Townsend ticks all the boxes for Rangers

Michael Ball has urged Rangers to go after Andros Townsend after he suggested he would be open to an Ibrox move.

The former Crystal Palace winger is a free agent after leaving Selhurst Park at the end of his deal, and he told talkSPORT on June 23 that he would not turn down a move to Scotland, as long as it is the best one for him and fulfils his needs.

Ball reckons the experience of the 29-year-old could come in handy at Rangers, insisting he could be a fine addition to manager Steven Gerrard’s squad.

“Players like Andros Townsend, seems to tick all of the boxes,” the former Light Blues left-back told This Is Futbol.

“He went on loan a lot and has played lower down and played against difficult opposition, difficult pitches, so he ticks all of the boxes for me.

“Yes, he could turn up against Celtic, but against Kilmarnock away he would know how to put in a performance as well.”

Spot on

Townsend has over 200 Premier League appearances under his belt playing for Tottenham Hotspur and Palace, but he garnered experience while growing up and developing in the League One and Championship, playing for the likes of Yeovil Town, Leyton Orient, MK Dons, Ipswich Town and Millwall.

He has seen it all, and a move to Rangers would not be seen as a downgrade, with Champions League football available.

Gerrard’s men are looking to play in the group stages of Europe’s elite competition and defend their Scottish Premiership title next term, and Townsend could be a much-needed addition in the attacking third for us.

He is no longer that player that used to trouble Premier League defences with an electric pace, but his ability in the final third remains there, and Premiership defences could find it difficult against him.

Given his wages, whether Townsend would be keen to move to Ibrox when clubs in England can potentially offer him double of what we can afford is up for debate, though.

We need more quality additions this summer to have a chance of impressing in Europe next season, and landing a player with the calibre of quality and huge experience the former England international brings to the table would be huge.
