Alex McLeish reacts to Nikola Katic return to training
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has been left buzzing by the return to training for Rangers defender Nikola Katic this week.
The Croatian has missed a huge chunk of action with that anterior cruciate ligament and looks set to be back involved with the squad.
McLeish shared his delight, but also his worry, insisting that it won’t be easy for him to return to his best immediately.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “It will be interesting to see how he comes back.
“The modern-day technology for injuries is so much better. Katic coming back is brilliant for the kid, can he go again and hit the ground running?
“He has to be able to do that as soon as he comes back, but when coming back from a long-term injury, it may take five or six games to get back to his best.
With it potentially taking a couple of months to return for Katic, pre-season games could be key ahead of the season and Champions League qualifiers.
Steven Gerrard won’t want to risk the Croatian enforcer too early but will want him to play a big part at Ibrox next season.
Katic has been phenomenal when on the pitch, we all remember that goal away at Celtic, one of his best moments in Glasgow.
Being back in training is one thing, but McLeish is spot on, he has to hit the ground running immediately to jump up the pecking order.
Conor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun will all be ahead of him through no fault of his own, and that is the challenge for him.
