Alex McLeish: Rangers star Nathan Patterson can be 'different animal' next season
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has insisted that Rangers defender Nathan Patterson can become a “different animal” next season.
The Bears sensation has had an incredible year, finishing the season at the EUROs with Scotland this summer.
Despite many believing he needs to keep his feet on the ground, McLeish hit back claiming that you need to be at your peak constantly when looking to breakthrough.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
“That is always underlined in any footballer I’ve ever played with or managed, they can be a different animal.
“You have to be playing at your peak at these very early stages of your career.”
Scratch away that one blip from his resume with the COVID breach, and Patterson will never forget this past season.
Finishing by making his major tournament debut in that defeat against Croatia may have been a blow, but a real moment to savour.
There will be many more caps and memories to make at international level, with the next step in his career Champions League football and retaining the Scottish Premiership.
Patterson needs to express himself, not keep his feet on the ground, or he could become fearful, when he has been fearless all year round.
This is perfect advice from McLeish, who will know what it takes to succeed and stick around at Ibrox for the long haul.
