Alex McLeish: Steven Gerrard unlikely to leave for the Premier League

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish doesn’t see Steven Gerrard leaving Rangers this summer under any circumstances.

The ex-Gers manager only expects the former England international to part ways with the club if the Liverpool job is vacant and Michael Edwards comes knocking on his or Rangers’ door.

Thus far, Gerrard has two years left on his deal at the Scottish champions and is looking forward to managing the side in the Champions League next season.

However, given the managerial chaos in the Premier League, McLeish is not surprised that Gerrard’s name has come up in a few reports [The Athletic]. According to Give Me Sport, one top-flight club in England has already made an offer.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “He’ll be talked about. He’ll be on the lists of chairmen in England but I think he’s waiting for something bigger.

“If Jurgen Klopp decides to leave in a couple of years maybe, and if Gerrard keeps on doing what he’s doing at Rangers, then he’ll prefer that.”

Earned himself the move

The moment Gerrard stepped into coaching he would’ve dreamt of one day returning to Anfield and guiding the club to glory.

Having failed to win the Premier League as a player, that’s certainly one trophy he will want to win as a manager.

If Liverpool were to hire a new manager tomorrow, few would think they’d look past Stevie G.

He’s not only a club legend but he has also ground it out as a manager and won Rangers their first league title after years of misery.

Gerrard’s already become a popular figure at Ibrox, and while it’ll hurt when the day of his departure arrives, the Gers faithful will be delighted that he’ll finally get to achieve his dream.

Currently, he’s got two more years in his contract left at the club – the same time Klopp has at Liverpool.

We’re not ones to overly believe in fate, but this seems like a rather uncanny coincidence.
