Chick Young thrilled by Rangers star Nathan Patterson for Scotland v Luxembourg
Chick Young was left stunned by Rangers talent Nathan Patterson as he made his Scotland debut against Luxembourg on Sunday night.
The BBC journalist insisted that the younger players such as the Bears star and Billy Gilmour have given themselves a brilliant chance of starting against the Czech Republic.
Patterson started on the bench but came on for his debut in the second half to replace the more experienced Stephen O’Donnell.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Sunday evening, Young was stunned by the effect of the younger players that were in the squad.
“Bright spots,” he said. “Just as we suggested it might be, the introduction of the younger players.
“Tonight, Nathan Patterson was absolutely terrific when he came on.”
Steven Gerrard will have been watching on with a huge smile.
This latest incident is a testament to his work and the development of Patterson at Auchenhowie and Ibrox over the past year.
Despite that one small blip when breaching COVID-19 protocols, the right-back has enjoyed a near-perfect year for his breakthrough campaign.
Steve Clarke has now been given a huge conundrum ahead of that opener at Hampden Park, with Patterson showcasing just how effective he can be in an attacking sense when playing wing-back.
O’Donnell may not have done much wrong, but can he give Scotland the same attacking verve when it may be desperately needed in games? Or will he just sit in and hope to do his defensive job.
We can’t be passive after more than 20 years away from major tournaments, and starting the likes of Patterson and Gilmour would be a real statement of intent.
