Ronald de Boer reckons Champions League football would be Gerrard’s best Rangers achievement

Rangers have not played in the group stages of the Champions League since 2011, and manager Steven Gerrard is hoping to buck the trend.

The Light Blues are in the Champions League third qualifying round as a result of winning the Scottish Premiership, and they will also need to progress to the play-off round and win to have a chance of playing in Europe’s elite competition for the first time in a decade.

Rangers legend Ronald de Boer believes Gerrard and his men have what it takes to be playing alongside the big boys on the continent, and is hoping their Europa League experience from last season would come in handy[The Scottish Sun].

“You have to be realistic because Rangers have two qualifying games and you are going to face one big name,” the Dutchman told The Scottish Sun.

“Realistically it is going to be really tough just to reach the Champions League. But they had some great experiences in the Europa League and that will help them.

“They do have a chance, but it would be an unbelievable achievement just to qualify. Making the group stage would be a huge bonus.”

Tough task ahead

Rangers impressed in the Europa League last season, securing victories in the second-qualifying round, third-qualifying round and play-off round.

We were drawn alongside Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan in Group D, topping the charts after four wins and two draws.

The Light Blues blew Antwerp away in the round of 32 but Slavia Prague proved too much for us to handle in the last-16.

Some tougher opposition awaits in both Champions League qualifying rounds, and going all the way to the group would be huge.

Rangers need to make two or three quality additions to the squad this summer to boost our chances, though.

Scotland have not had a team in the group stages of the competition since 2017-18, and we have a chance to prove that we are a quality side capable of going toe to toe with some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Gerrard and the players will be very keen to show what they are made of, and we cannot wait to see how they fare.
