Carlos Mendes Gomes insists Rangers link is just rumour right now

Carlos Mendes Gomes has reacted to the links with Rangers after helping Morecambe seal their first-ever promotion to the English League One.

The Scottish Sun claimed in April that the Ibrox outfit were keeping tabs on the Spanish attacking midfielder after watching him a number of occasions.

Rangers are also said to have contacted Morecambe about Gomes[The Sun], and he has responded to the reports, insisting they are just rumours for now.

“The Rangers thing is a rumour. And at the moment, it is just that; a rumour,” the former Atletico Madrid youth player said days after bagging the winner in the League Two play-off Final [The Sun].

“Morecambe have just given me the happiest day of my career. That day at Wembley will be something I will be able to tell my grandchildren.”

Gomes was set to be out of contract at the end of 2020-21, but Morecambe have activated an extra year on his deal so he will not be free.

A good fit for Rangers’ title defence?

The 22-year-old ended the campaign with 16 goals and five assists in 42 League Two games, and we could do with such a quality finisher next season.

Alfredo Morelos could look to leave in the summer, and Gomes could prove to be a fine addition to bolster our attack.

As WhoScored highlighted, the Senegal-born winger’s strengths are his finishing and defensive contribution, and those would come in handy at Ibrox.

Rangers are looking to scale through two qualifying games and book a place in the group stages of next season’s Champions League, and manager Steven Gerrard needs to make top additions to his squad this summer.

Defending the Premiership title and winning the Cup competitions are also equally as important, and someone like Gomes could bring much-needed squad depth and competition in the final third.

Rangers have reportedly done their due diligence on the right-sided winger [The Sun], and it will be interesting to see whether a move for him is on the cards.
