Alex McLeish: Premier League clubs wasting their time with Steven Gerrard pursuit

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has warned Premier League clubs that they would be wasting their time trying to secure Steven Gerrard from Rangers.

The Athletic has linked the Bears boss with shock moves in the past week, including the vacant positions at Wolves and even Everton.

McLeish believes it is only about legacy for Gerrard, who will not be interested in another role just because they can pay more money.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Yeah, they’re wasting their time.

“I believe that he is a loyal guy, does he need the money? No. Will it be more money in England than it is in Scotland? Probably.

“Obviously, Premier league clubs pay higher, but I think it’s more that Steven Gerrard wants a pristine job where he’s winning rather than the money.

“It’s more about glory and making the incredible Rangers fans happy.”

Secure.

We have said all along that the only job that would see Gerrard quit this magical Ibrox stint is Liverpool once Jurgen Klopp moves on.

It is something we know will eventually happen, but it will still cut deep once it does.

The links with Everton this week are especially laughable, why would the Liverpool icon ever accept a move to his once fierce rivals; that is like Ally McCoist taking charge at Parkhead.

Gerrard is staying put, we are confident that he will continue building this new legacy at Auchenhowie until that dream job at Anfield arises in the years to come.
